January 2019
Studies for January include Antarctica and American History. We begin with a look at glaciers and icebergs. We use a sample of a glacier and iceberg so the children can see the difference. Many children made icebergs at home after our lesson and did some amazing Antarctica work. We also study Antarctica each January and many of the children researched and presented projects they created in class. The third graders had to write an opinion essay with citations from the text to back up their opinions. This was a challenge for all but we came up with some really interesting facts. Many decided to do a presentation and PowerPoint too.
As we get into U.S. History we will study the presidents and the beginning of the United States. We will study the Jamestown Settlers and the westward expansion of the U.S. We had a great talk about Martin Luther King Jr. and compared the bullying that children experience to the real life and prejudice experienced by people during Martin Luther King Jr.'s time as well as what is going on now. I urged them to have a discussion with their parents about this really important topic.
